Verdicts on vehicle handling often make use of the terms “oversteer” and “understeer”. When a vehicle oversteers, it covers a smaller curve radius than that corresponding to the steering-wheel angle; when a vehicle understeers, it covers a large curve radius. This inherent steering behavior is a consequence of different requirements on the slip angles of the wheels which arise when, with increasing centrifugal force, the ratio of lateral force to wheel load develops differently at the front and rear axles. Normally, neutral cornering behavior is required.
