The cooling medium, or coolant ,in them is either water or some low-freezing liquid ,called antifreeze. It is solution which is added to the cooling system to lower the temperature at which freezing  of the coolant occurs, The actual freezing temperature is governed  by the quantity of antifreeze added  to the system. Ice increase its volume as its temperature decrease,so extensive  damage to the cylinder block will result  if the coolant freezes. Most modern anti-freeze solutions contain special chemical additives called inhibitors to reduce corrosion of the metal parts. Care must be taken to avoid splashing anti-freeze on the vehicle paintwork,since some of the chemicals can soften the paint.

   冷却媒介或者散热剂，包括冷却水和一些防冻液，被称为冷却液。那时对添加到冷却系统中的冷却水在低温凝结成冰问题的解决办法：世纪的凝结温度是由添加到系统中的冷却液的质量来决定的，当温度降低时，冰得体积会增加，那么假如防冻液凝结的话，将极大地损坏缸体，大多数现代的冷却液都使用特殊的化学添加剂——抑制剂来减少对金属零件的腐蚀。注意不要把冷却液喷溅在车的漆皮上，因为一些化学制品能软化漆皮。
